The conquest of Mexico, an extensive empire with a numerous and
warlike population, by a mere handful of Spaniards, is one of the
romances of history. Indeed, a writer of fiction would scarcely have
dared to invent so improbable a story. Even the bravery of the
Spaniards, and the advantage of superior arms would not have
sufficed to give them the victory, had it not been that Mexico was
ripe for disruption. The Aztecs, instead of conciliating by wise and
gentle government the peoples they had conquered, treated them
with such despotic harshness that they were ready to ally themselves
with the invaders, and to join with them heartily against the central
power; so that instead of battling against an empire single-handed,
the Spaniards had really only to war with a great city, and were
assisted by a vast army of auxiliaries.

It is the opinion of some historians that Hernán Cortés’ conquest of Mexico (1519-1521) was the greatest adventure in western history. While history buffs may or may not agree with that assessment it nonetheless was truly an astonishing achievement. Although G. A. Henty’s 1891 historical novel By Right of Conquest was not the first one on the subject – Lew Wallace’s The Fair God and Samuel Shellabarger’s Captain From Castile comes to mind – it nevertheless is a wonderfully exciting and informative read that belongs on the same bookshelf as those two minor classics. Its protagonist is a young Briton named Roger Hawkshaw who becomes shipwrecked off the east coast of Mexico a few years before Cortés’ first incursion into the very heart of that country. Befriended by tribes of indigenous natives, Roger lives with them, learns their languages, and earns their respect as a formidable warrior. Despite this, his six-foot stature makes him stand out among the diminutive natives; a physical feature that causes some problems along the way, when he tries to pass himself off as an Indian. Eventually he develops an emotional attachment to a beautiful native princess; and a close friendship with the now famous Malinche – who later on became Cortés’ mistress and a crucial component in his introduction to and war with the Aztecs. Today Malinche, or Doña Marina as Cortés preferred to call her, is a highly esteemed figure in Mexican history. One day finding himself close to the Spanish camp, Roger decides to join them and – somehow – return to England. But Spain and England being at war the Spanish would deem him an enemy. So, once in Cortés camp he declares himself a Spaniard who’d been shipwrecked off the Mexican coast as a child, raised by Indians and has forgotten his native Spanish – which he soon learns with the conquistadores. What follows is an accurate depiction of a long and bloody conflict wherein thousands died and an ancient civilization crumbled. The main reason being that by 1519 the Aztecs were despised by their conquered neighbors; whom they oppressed. Thus they formed pacts with the Spaniards. Had it not been for the indigenous allies the conquest would not have been possible. This particular edition by the Fireship Press is a beautiful copy, with helpful historical notes and background information. A page-turner of a novel, By Right of Conquest is a spellbinding adventure.— Victor Rodriguez, author of TAĺNO SUNRISE.

By Right of Conquest With Cortez in Mexico Illustrated Edition eBook GA Henty Reviews
good book
We bought this book for use in our homeschool co-op. The book was thought provoking and insightful. It provided a fascinating look into the time period. I highly recommend it.
However, our book literally fell apart within two days of reading. The book is bound too tight which caused the pages to fall out. The print quality is slightly blurry, and the cover did not hold up well. When we went to class, students with the same version arrived complaining of the same thing. It's hard to read when the pages are constantly falling out.
I've heard quite a bit about the Henty series over the last year and was happy to find this book was available.
My copy is from Fireship Press and it is made of good quality paper and sturdily bound. The cover is beautiful.
I think I made the right choice for my introduction into this renowned historical series.
